There’s something undeniably magical about Sedona. Its towering red rock formations and vast, open skies have a way of framing life’s most important moments. For one Phoenix-based family, Sedona was more than just a beautiful backdrop; it was the place where they began their journey together five years ago. They returned to Secret Slick Rock Trail—not far from where they exchanged vows—to celebrate their wedding anniversary and to include their 2.5-year-old son in a new chapter of their family’s story.
As a Northern Arizona family photographer, I specialize in turning these deeply personal milestones into lasting visual heirlooms. This session perfectly encapsulates why I love what I do: blending stunning landscapes with genuine family connection.
We scheduled the session for golden hour in Sedona, aiming for that perfect, warm glow that makes the red rocks feel like they’re on fire. However, as we began, the sky was blanketed in clouds, casting a soft, flat light across the landscape.
While some might see this as a challenge, my years of experience as an Arizona landscape photographer have taught me the power of patience. Flat light can be beautiful for capturing even skin tones and subtle emotions. We embraced it, focusing on the family’s connection—the gentle way dad held his son’s hand, the loving glances between husband and wife.
And then, just as we were about to conclude, the clouds parted. The setting sun erupted through the horizon, bathing Secret Slick Rock Trail & Cathedral Rock in the most epic, radiant light imaginable. Those final minutes were pure magic, and we captured some of the most breathtaking family portraits I’ve ever taken. They’re not just pictures; they’ve become pieces of their family’s history.
The most important element of any family session isn’t the light or the location—it’s the connection. As a father myself, I immediately connected with their energetic and curious toddler. That rapport is essential for creating authentic photos where families can truly be themselves.
When the parents expressed a desire for a few quick couples portraits but were worried about their son, we got creative. I put their little one to work as my “official assistant,” having him hold a light stand (under very close supervision, of course!). He felt involved and important, and we even snapped a few candid photos of him helping—a cherished behind-the-scenes memory for the family album.
This adaptability is a cornerstone of my approach. Whether you have a busy toddler, a shy teen, or a multi-generational group, my goal is to make everyone feel comfortable and valued.
At the end of our session, the mother shared something that will stay with me forever. She told me they have a portrait from their wedding day hanging prominently in their home and that the photos from this anniversary session would be placed right next to it.
This is the highest honor I can receive as a photographer. It’s a powerful reminder that my work is about creating family heirlooms—tangible pieces of a family’s history that will be passed down and cherished for generations.
If this story resonates with you, I would be deeply honored to help tell yours. Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary in Sedona, a family reunion in Flagstaff, or simply the everyday joy of being together, I will work with you to create a custom, stress-free photography experience.
My knowledge of Northern Arizona’s hidden gems—from Secret Slick Rock Trail to the serene meadows of Flagstaff—ensures your photos will be as unique as your family’s story.
